Ankle sprains are one of the most common and often self-inflicted of injuries. Ankle sprains occur when you move your foot in one direction, and the ligaments get disrupted and twisted as they go the other. Swelling and internal bleeding might occur, making walking painful and difficult. The RICE approach of rest, ice, compression and elevation should immediately be followed to treat any ankle sprain. Chronic sprains that do not resolve on their own require medical evaluation and in some cases, surgery.
